What does a school governor do?

School governors play a crucial role in the strategic management of the school. Their responsibilities include:

  • Setting the Vision and Strategic Direction: Governors help define the school’s goals and ensure there is a clear plan to achieve them.
  • Overseeing Financial Performance: They ensure that the school’s budget is managed effectively and that resources are used efficiently.
  • Monitoring and Evaluating Performance: They regularly review the school’s performance data to ensure that the school is meeting its targets and providing the best possible education for all children.
  • Ensuring Accountability: Governors hold the headteacher and senior leaders accountable for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.
  • Time Commitment: Governors are expected to complete training, prepare for and attend a minimum of three Full Governing Board meetings and additional Committee meetings annually (each typically 1–2 hours in the evening).

Who can become a governor?

You may have children at one of our schools but you don’t need to have a child attending to become a governor. You do need to demonstrate a commitment to the safety and welfare of children. We welcome applications from anyone over the age of 18 and you would need to pass a formal check to ensure you are suitable to be within a school.

The most important qualities are a commitment to the school, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work as part of a team.

Thank you for considering this important role. Together, we can continue to make our schools places where every child thrives.
