What does a school governor do?
School governors play a crucial role in the strategic management of the school. Their responsibilities include:
- Setting the Vision and Strategic Direction: Governors help define the school’s goals and ensure there is a clear plan to achieve them.
- Overseeing Financial Performance: They ensure that the school’s budget is managed effectively and that resources are used efficiently.
- Monitoring and Evaluating Performance: They regularly review the school’s performance data to ensure that the school is meeting its targets and providing the best possible education for all children.
- Ensuring Accountability: Governors hold the headteacher and senior leaders accountable for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.
- Time Commitment: Governors are expected to complete training, prepare for and attend a minimum of three Full Governing Board meetings and additional Committee meetings annually (each typically 1–2 hours in the evening).

Who can become a governor?
You may have children at one of our schools but you don’t need to have a child attending to become a governor. You do need to demonstrate a commitment to the safety and welfare of children. We welcome applications from anyone over the age of 18 and you would need to pass a formal check to ensure you are suitable to be within a school.
The most important qualities are a commitment to the school, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work as part of a team.

Different Governance roles
Click on the headings below to find out more about the different types of roles on our boards.
Co-opted governors
Co-opted governors don’t have to have a connection to the school or Trust. They are appointed by the Local Governing Board because they have the skills and experience needed to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school. They are sometimes also referred to as community governors as they may come from the community the school is in and therefore understand the needs of that community.
Parent governors
Parent governors are elected by the parents or carers of children currently attending their school. They must have a child enrolled at the school at the time of their election. Their main responsibility is to represent the views and interests of parents on the Local Governing Board, ensuring that parental perspectives are considered in school decisions. Parent governors bring valuable insights into how policies and practices affect children and their families, and they act in the best interests of the whole school community.
Staff governors
Staff governors are members of the school’s staff who are elected by their colleagues to serve on the Local Governing Board. They provide an internal perspective on the school’s operations, policies, and staff welfare. Staff governors contribute to discussions with firsthand knowledge of day-to-day activities, helping to ensure that decisions made by the Local Governing Board are practical and beneficial for both staff and students. They act in the best interests of the school as a whole, not just representing staff views.
Trustees
Trustees are members of the academy Trustee Board, responsible for the overall strategic direction, financial oversight, and legal compliance of Peak Edge. They are appointed for their skills, experience, and commitment to ensuring the Trust’s success. Trustees do not need to have a direct connection to any individual school within the Trust, but they must act in the best interests of all schools and children under the Trust’s care. Their role is to hold the executive leaders to account, ensure effective use of resources, and make decisions that support the Trust’s vision, values, and long-term sustainability.
Associate Members
Associate members are appointed by the Local Governing Board or Trustee Board because of their expertise in specific areas such as finance, education, or business management. While they do not have voting rights like full governors, associate members participate in meetings and provide valuable advice based on their specialised knowledge. Their contributions help inform decision-making processes in areas where additional expertise is required.
Thank you for considering this important role. Together, we can continue to make our schools places where every child thrives.
